WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut Department of Transportation officials say they're getting closer to deciding how to change improve and change the "Mixmaster" interchange in Waterbury in the long-term.

The "Mixmaster" refers to the interchange where Interstate 84 and Route 8 meet.

On Tuesday, officials said two alternatives are advancing: the "Modern Crossover Interchange" and the "Naugatuck River Shift."

In both options, the I-84 and Route 8 structures would be unstacked and reconstructed with an expected lifespan of over 75 years.

CTDOT commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said the work will likely take decades to complete fully.
