WASHINGTON — Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Trump administration will be retaking control of D.C.'s Union Station at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
The Department of Transportation has owned Union Station for over 40 years, but the nonprofit Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC) has run it since 1983.
"During this period, Washington Union Station has become dilapidated. It is known more as a center for vagrancy than a hub for commerce and travel," a DOT press release claimed.
Now, the quasi-public passenger rail corporation Amtrak is subleasing from USRC in a move to put more of the station's retail revenue back into the station.
"Not a power play, we've always had it," Duffy said, "but we think we can manage the property better."
