The investigation into who killed Meredith Kercher lasted eight years despite a suspect being found guilty just one year after her murder.

After the London-born student was found dead in her study abroad residence in November 2007, Italian police swiftly arrested her American roommate, Amanda Knox , as a primary suspect. While DNA evidence proved another suspect had sexually assaulted Kercher, the Italian justice system continued to pursue Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito .

“I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal. I wasn’t there. I wasn’t there at the crime,” Knox said during her 10-minute testimony in October 2011, per WHAS11 .
