AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV) - The Texas House passed a new bill Tuesday to remove the STAAR test and replace it with three smaller tests taken throughout the year. However, it received much less support compared to lawmaker’s original attempt at STAAR changes in May after multiple news edits to the bill.
Passing 82-56, House Bill 8 makes several changes in state standardized testing, including the STAAR test and new testing methods. Original attempts in May to make changes to STAAR passed the House with near-unanimous approval, with a 143-1 vote. The difference between the currently proposed bill and May’s failed bill includes how much power the Texas Education Agency has over the new tests and the wide-ranging but not fully understood impacts of the bill.
