Sentimental journeys are often more easily imagined than taken. So it was with my recent trip to San Antonio, my hometown . My sister-in-law Alison, one of the kindest people I’ve ever known, had expressed one final wish before she died of cancer last year: A San Antonio girl by birth and upbringing, Alison wanted her husband, Jeff (my brother), to travel from their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, to accompany their son, Paul; his wife, Lena; and the couple’s almost two-year-old son, Ira—who all live in Brooklyn—to the San Antonio Zoo . Some of Alison’s happiest days had been spent there when Paul was young. Any other relatives who wanted to join were welcome. Alison had made one addition to her request: a big family dinner at the city’s classic Mexican restaurant La Fonda on Main
