Ryan Borgwardt, the 45-year-old Wisconsin kayaker who faked his death before fleeing the U.S., has been sentenced to 89 days in jail.
Borgwardt pleaded no contest at Green Lake County Circuit Court to a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer on Aug. 26, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of USA TODAY Network.
As part of the plea deal, Borgwardt paid $30,000 before the hearing, and the money was divided between the Green Lake County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
It will help reimburse the departments for some of the resources spent on finding Borgwardt across a 58-day period, before authorities learned he was alive overseas, Green Lake County District Attorney Gerise LaSpisa said.
