LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Lafayette Parish officials have announced a new program to help residents deal with the increasing levels of dangerous summer heat in South Louisiana.

The Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) said in a news release that it is leading a coordinated heat response prioritizing preparedness, partnerships and public education to help keep residents safe.

The effort brings together local agencies, nonprofits and businesses to establish a reliable heat emergency framework that can be activated during severe weather conditions, according to Chad Sonnier, Director of Lafayette Parish OHSEP.
