A day after paring their active roster down to 53 players , the New Orleans Saints are in the early stages of assembling their practice squad.

The first move was to bring back defensive lineman Jonah Williams, according to a league source , giving the Saints another player who has some experience with defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Williams played under Staley in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams. He was a strong candidate to make the initial 53-man roster, but the Saints kept defensive end Jonathan Bullard instead.

The majority of the practice squad should come in later Wednesday, as most of the players the Saints let go Tuesday must clear waivers before they are eligible to come back to New Orleans on the practice squad.
