CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WBTV) - A rare great hammerhead shark washed ashore dead along a North Carolina beach on Tuesday.

The shark was reportedly found on Tuesday, Aug. 26, on the sand of Carolina Beach in New Hanover County.

According to the Shark Research Institute , the great hammerhead shark is the largest of the hammerhead shark species.

What we know

The 600-pound female shark was reportedly found off Sand Dollar Lane on the beach.

A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Marine Fisheries Division told our sister station, WECT , that town officials had contacted the division’s Wilmington office about the shark.
