A United Airlines passenger trying to rebook flights over the phone says he lost more than $17,000 at the hands of a scammer .

Dan Smoker, a Denver resident, was set to take his wife, kids and their friends to Europe for 18 days in late May. After the group’s initial flight was cancelled due to mechanical issues, he says he called the United customer service number the next day.
