The future of a Jersey Shore hardware store that sold beach essentials to generations is uncertain after two proposals — one to build a new store and another to replace the current building with a hotel — were rejected.

Hand’s, the iconic store on Long Beach Boulevard in Long Beach Township, closed briefly in 2020 when it was sold after its longtime owner retired. Founded in 1952, the store has sold clothing, hardware, home decor, furniture, toys, games and more to locals and families on summer vacation.

The current owners, Elm H. Holdings LLC, proposed two plans. One called for the construction of a new three-story store on a nearby parking lot, while the other proposed the demolition of the existing store to build a 24-room hotel with a rooftop swimming pool.
