Jay Carey was eating lunch in the District of Columbia with a group of fellow veterans when he saw the news: President Donald Trump was signing an executive order prosecuting the burning of the American flag.
There would be a yearlong prison sentence for those who do it, Trump said, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi would "prioritize the enforcement" of the order to the "fullest extent." If enforced, it would disrupt a precedent — flag burning has been considered protected under the First Amendment by the U.S. Supreme Court since 1989.
