The West Midlands is the most fertile place in the UK, according to new data.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) data reveals that the West Midlands recorded the highest regional fertility rate in 2024, reaching 1.5 born per 1,000 people, whilst south-west England registered the lowest figure at 1.31.

The majority of regions experienced a decline in their total fertility rate, with just two areas – London and the West Midlands – witnessing a year-on-year rise.

Looking at individual local authority areas, Luton in Bedfordshire topped the charts with the highest total fertility rate in 2024 at 2.00 children per woman, closely followed by Barking & Dagenham in London at 1.99, Slough in Berkshire at 1.96, and Sandwell in the West Midlands at 1.91.
