Iwas walking in my neighborhood one day and noticed an elderly man down on his hands and knees, trying to weed a garden bed that had pretty much become a hopeless mess. It was obvious that the battle against nature had already declared a winner.
I grimaced for a moment at the futility of his work and as I passed, I gave him one of those knowing looks: “… and they told us that slavery was abolished!” He looked up from his honey-do chore, laughed in agreement, and I continued on my way, chuckling right up to my own front door.
Well, it really isn’t funny. The reality is that there are, fundamentally, lots of things that we don’t own and which, in a sense, own us. The weedy onslaught of nature is just one of them.
