MONTREAL — A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the burning of an Israeli flag outside Hampstead Town Hall. The arrest took place on Tuesday in the Villeray—St-Michel—Parc-Extension borough, according to Montreal police.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when dispatchers received a call around 7 a.m. reporting a fire in front of the town hall. Upon arrival, police found that the Israeli flag had been set ablaze, causing minor damage to the area.

This was not the first incident involving the flag. The mayor of Hampstead noted that the same flag had been burned the previous Friday.

The investigation is being handled by the police hate crimes unit, and arson squad investigators have seized items from the suspect's apartment as part of their inquiry.

Authorities have stated that it will be up to prosecutors to decide whether charges will be filed against the arrested individual.

The investigation continues as police gather more information regarding the incidents.
