ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- The Chemung County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a phone scam targeting people, threatening that they have an arrest warrant and must pay.

The Sheriff's Office on Wednesday reported getting numerous phone calls from people saying they had been contacted by a person on the phone identifying themselves as Sergeant Jim Ritter. The caller then states "Sgt. Ritter" informs them they have a warrant for their arrest for Failure to Appear, Criminal Contempt or some other civil process. The caller then requests money for a court summons, and even mentions the warrant being issued by Chemung County Court Judge Chris Baker.

The scammer then directs the victim to go to a Dollar General or Family Dollar store, purchase a Money Pak card, then scratch off the code on
