MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — A 34-year-old township man was arrested after he allegedly swung an ax at police officers during a standoff Friday.

Stewart Allay was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, hindering apprehension and obstruction, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was sent to the Cape May County jail.

Officers responded to a home on West Shell Bay Avenue in Cape May Court House at 6:22 p.m. Friday following reports that Allay was acting erratically and aggressively toward family members while in possession of an ax, police said Wednesday in a news release.

When police arrived, they were informed that Allay had entered a two-story shed on the property with the weapon, police said.
