HOLYOKE — A Holyoke man wanted for a Sunday night stabbing tried to escape police on a bicycle — but the chase ended when he crashed into a cruiser on Hamilton Street, authorities said.

Carlos Javier Caraballo, 40, of Holyoke, was arrested on Monday and charged with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury, armed assault with intent to rob, and resisting arrest. Police said he also had two outstanding warrants.

On Sunday around 8:20 a.m., officers responded to 435 Appleton St. for a report of the stabbing, Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan said in a social media post. The stabbing happened near Chestnut and Appleton streets, police said, and the victim ran to Appleton Street to get away from Caraballo and then called 911, he said.
