Catelin Drey's 10-point victory over Christopher Prosch in Iowa Senate District 1's special election broke up the Republican supermajority in the Iowa Senate.

As recently as last year's general election, Iowa Senate District 1 voted for Republican candidates by a 10-point margin.

Drey flipped 10 precincts from Republican to Democrat in the Sioux City-area district on her way to victory.

Iowa Democrats scored a big win on Aug. 26 as Catelin Drey defeated Republican Christopher Prosch in a special election for state Senate District 1.

Republican Sen. Rocky De Witt held the seat until he died of pancreatic cancer in June , prompting the special election.

The result flips the seat to Democratic, and it means the GOP will no longer hold a supermajority in the state Senate.
