One blood center in Iowa's blood supply is at a critical level and it is launching new blood drives, some of which offer donors a chance to win prizes.

Johnston-based LifeServe Blood Center announced on Wednesday, Aug. 27, that some of its blood types have inventory supplies of just 2-3 days. Blood centers in neighboring states have declared blood emergencies, meaning supplies there aren't able to meet their local community needs.

A major trauma or accident, like the mass shooting at a church in Minneapolis on Wednesday , could quickly deplete the blood supply in central Iowa, officials said.

To boost supplies heading into Labor Day weekend , LifeServe created new promotions and giveaways to incentivize people to donate.
