The historic Kimball Castle in Gilford, New Hampshire, was badly damaged in a fire Wednesday morning and will now have to be torn down.
Gilford police and fire said in a social media post early Wednesday morning that Route 11 was shut down from Scenic Drive to Belknap Point while firefighters battled a blaze on Lockes Hill. The highway reopened later in the day.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, police said the fire occurred at the historic Kimball Castle property, located at 59 Lockes Hill Road. The fire also spread into the surrounding brush.
