GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska State Fair contains many exhibits associated closely with the state, even including one with Nebraska-born alligators.
Wildlife Encounters, an organization dedicated to housing exotic animals in need, showed off its rescued animals at the State Fair Wednesday morning.
The alligators mainly consist of people who acquired the creatures as pets but then realized that they cannot afford or do not want to take care of them, Kip Smith with Wildlife Encounters said.
The species can weigh hundreds of pounds and reach over a dozen feet, meaning that keeping it in the home isn’t practical for most people.
Smith said that you need a full facility to properly take care of the creatures and that they are not “lap pets.”
