LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is reminding pet owners how to keep their animals safe this Labor Day weekend.

"When making any holiday plans, it is important not to overlook the needs of our animals," said Dr. Nora Wineland, the state veterinarian. "From watching what they eat to where they swim, there are many precautions owners can take to keep their animals safe this Labor Day."

Wineland is providing seven tips to keep animals safe.

Keep animals up to date on vaccinations: MDARD recommends keeping pets up to date on routine vaccinations to protect them against common diseases such as rabies and distemper. Owners can contact their veterinarian to ensure that vaccinations are complete or to schedule an appointment.
