THORNTON, Ill. - Police are swarming a neighborhood in south suburban Thornton Wednesday afternoon for what they are calling a "critical incident" and are urging residents to stay inside their homes.

What we know:

Officers were called to the area of Bonnie and Highland about 3:45 p.m., according to Thornton police. Authorities have not released more details about the nature of the incident.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area until further notice. Those who live nearby should remain in their homes and follow instructions from law enforcement, police said.

"There is no immediate threat to the general public outside of the incident area, but the situation is ongoing," police said in a statement.
