At the Bob Bolen Public Safety Complex Administration, Fort Worth firefighters are getting behind the wheel for a course the department has never offered before: driving ambulances.

When MedStar operated Fort Worth’s EMS system, fire crews would jump in the back of ambulances if help was needed.

“Previously, the MedStar folks, before they came over, they had to operate the vehicles, and the fire guys from our department would be in the back all the time,” Fire Chief Jim Davis said. “Well, now, we’re one organization. There’s no reason that the fire guys can’t drive to the hospital when extra sets of hands are needed.”

That allows EMS personnel who are used to working together to stay together, working more efficiently on the patient.
