A Civil District Court judge has ordered Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration to temporarily stop skimming from school tax revenues , which the city collects on behalf of the Orleans Parish School Board.

Judge Bernadette D’Souza issued the temporary restraining order on Tuesday after three public charter school organizations filed a petition the same day. Judge Sidney Cates is scheduled to consider a longer injunction at a hearing on Sept. 4.

The order forces the Cantrell administration to comply with a City Council ordinance passed in April – which the administration has openly defied – forbidding the controversial collection fees through 2026. After that, fees will be allowed only through a long-term agreement with the School Board setting the amount.
