CLAYTON — Thousands of older area homeowners could see a bigger break on their tax bills after the St. Louis County Council voted to expand the county’s senior property tax freeze.
Councilman Dennis Hancock, a Republican from Fenton, said the change approved this week will apply the freeze to the entire tax bill for an eligible senior homeowner, not just part of it, as originally planned.
“What that really means is, seniors are going to get the tax relief that we’ve intended all along during this process,” Hancock said Wednesday.
St. Louis County, and dozens of counties across Missouri, chose to not apply the freeze to the portion of the tax bill that pays down government debt, said Dennis Ganahl, co-founder of MO Tax Relief Now, a group that has lobbied for senior tax freezes statewide
