A former CNN anchor issued a dire warning on Wednesday about the "intentions" of the Trump administration.

"All this week, Trump has repeatedly sent signals of his autocratic intentions," Jim Acosta, who worked at CNN from 2007 until 2021, wrote in a new essay on Substack.

Acosta argued that Trump's intentions became clear during the recent cabinet meeting. Not only did cabinet officials heap praise on he president for over three hours, but there were also "acts of authoritarian idolatry" like the banners paying tribute to Trump that hung around Washington, D.C. and the White House, Acosta noted.

"Is there any doubt that Trump is now waging the campaign of revenge and retribution he promised during the run-up to the 2024 election?" Acosta wrote. "Just ask Bolton. In the days before voters cast their ballots, then-Vice President Kamala Harris pointed to Trump’s Hitler-like rhetoric he employed during his rallies, where he routinely referred to certain Americans as 'the enemy from within.' Her comments are worth a second viewing."

"Judges? Check. Journalists? Eh-hem… check. Non-partisan election officials? See above," Acosta added. "If the former V.P.’s words of caution sound familiar, it is because this is exactly what Trump has done during his return to power.

"And he is only seven months into this experiment of electing an anti-democratic menace to lead the most powerful democracy the world has ever known," the essay continued. "It is far from alarmist to presume that all of this will end badly."
