A "feast to famine" summer has left many areas of the Ozarks parched. Rainfall surpluses since the beginning of the year have quickly been erased thanks to a "flash drought" that began in July.
A "flash drought" is a drought that develops quickly, typically over the course of weeks rather than months to years.
Rains that were generous at the beginning of the summer faded after the first week of June. The hardest hit areas have been across Southwest Missouri into Northern Arkansas where rain amounts have been close to 50% of normal.
Sometimes Mother Nature gets the memo and sends some help. The rain that falls heading into Thursday will focus over the driest areas, Southwest Missouri into Northern Arkansas. But, it may be a case of too much of a good thing.
