MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The USS Wisconsin SSBN 827 Association hosted a keel laying ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new vessel.

The event, which took place in North Kingstown, Rhode Island on Wednesday, celebrated the official start of construction for the U.S. Navy’s newest ballistic missile submarine and was led by Dr. Kelly Geurts.

Geurts is a retired educator with a distinguished career spanning over three decades, the Association said. She is dedicated to inclusion, arts integration, and educational access. She also is a military spouse, deepening her connection to the event.
