NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The next-generation Amtrak Acela made its first stop in New Haven’s Union Station on Wednesday.
The new trains are the fastest and most high-tech to hit the rails in Connecticut with upgraded interiors as well.
Amtrak President Roger Harris said the new Acela trains are 27% bigger than their previous Acela trains. The new generation trains can reach up to 160 miles per hour.
“They are actually the latest technology Alstom high-speed trains that aren’t even in service in Europe yet,” Harris said. "So it is really, we are getting to lead the world with this technology and we feel very fortunate.”
The train is on a tour up through the Northeast corridor, starting Wednesday in Washington, D.C., before wrapping up the day in Boston.
