ST. LOUIS — Last week, both Justin Lawrence and Tim Mayza began their rehab assignments after more than four months away from competition. Now, they’re (technically) one step from the big leagues.
Both Mayza and Lawrence had their rehab assignments transferred to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. While both will need multiple appearances before a big-league return, it’s a positive step for two of the Pirates’ relievers.
Both pitched beyond an inning Tuesday. Mayza pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing a run on three hits. He struck out two. Lawrence pitched the seventh and recorded an out in the eighth, allowing one run on zero hits and two walks. He also struck out two.
