Harrietstown, N.Y. – A Central New York native who was on multiple U.S. national bobsled teams has died in the Adirondacks in an apparent drowning.

John D. Cogar, 76, originally from Auburn, went missing last Thursday evening in Harrietstown, according to a State Police news release.

Cogar jumped into the water from a pontoon boat just north of Eagle Island on Lower Saranac Lake and did not resurface, according to troopers and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. A boater contacted police at about 6 p.m.

DEC police and forest rangers along with a State Police dive team searched the waters that night, but broke off the search shortly after midnight, according to the DEC.

State police divers found his body Sunday morning.

Cogar spent most of his life in Upstate New York.
