SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Friday makes twenty years since the devastating Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area.

The hurricane caused thousands of deaths and severe injuries. Among those were people dealing with chronic illnesses who had to leave everything behind.

KSLA’s Marvin Andrade stopped by a local clinic that was at the center of the evacuees.

Janet Mentesane was on the front line of the recovery effort for the disastrous Hurricane Katrina. She says her patients weren’t dealing with physical trauma or waterborne diseases but rather — chronic illnesses.

In 2005, Mantesane was the executive director of MLK Health and Pharmacy, a free clinic in Shreveport.
