OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A new state law increasing the penalties for speeders goes into effect Sept. 3.

Under the law, driving double the posted speed limit will also be considered reckless driving.

“If you’re like in a really densely populated area like this it makes a lot of sense you really got to be careful,” Shane Wafle of Omaha, said.

Wafle drives to downtown Omaha everyday for work. He thinks the changes will do a lot of good and said he sees speeding happen in downtown way too often.

“They have those laws set for a reason,” Wafle said.

Under the law, violators who drive 5 miles or more on any Nebraska road will face a $50 fine plus court costs.

Previously, that was $10.

10 miles or more will increase from $25 to $75.
