GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A standoff and hostage situation in Grand Island Wednesday afternoon has ended with a child safely freed and a man taken into custody.

The incident lasted over three hours at a home near 6th and Adams Streets.

Grand Island Police said the man initially barricaded himself inside the home around 3 p.m. with a child, prompting officers to block nearby streets and negotiate for several hours.

After negotiators secured the child’s release, the man remained inside armed with a knife.

Video from the scene later showed him walking out of the house on his own. Officers ordered him to the ground and took him into custody in handcuffs. Police confirmed they fired four impact rounds into the home and deployed a yellow gas to help end the standoff.
