NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It was 20 years ago, when Louisiana's coast was hit by the costliest storm in U.S. history.

But before Hurricane Katrina could even make landfall, the Arkansas National Guard began opening armories for refugees seeking shelter.

Some Guardsmen were deployed on a different mission—dealing with the aftermath.

"I remember going door to door, downtown. Helping move vehicles,” Chief Master Sergeant Jonathan Hunter said. “And that's one of the most devastating parts of my early career—the first time I saw a deceased person.”

Jonathan Hunter was one of five panelists at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock, sharing a memory of the time they were sent to the heart of destruction in Louisiana.
