MACOMB (WGEM) - Next week, the Macomb City Council is set to vote on the creation of a business development district.
Mayor Michael Inman described it as a geographical location that enhances the local tax base to promote development and redevelopment of businesses.
“It allows for reinvestment in vertical construction within the district, and that can be public or private,” Inman said.
The proposed district focuses on the Jackson Street corridor, North Lafayette, and the square.
Upon implementation, the city intends to impose a retailer’s occupation tax, a service occupation tax, and a hotel operators occupation tax. Each would be taxed at 1%.
Inman said one cent for every dollar spent would contribute.
If passed, the district would be in place for 23 years.
