SPARTANBURG, S.C. —
Spartanburg city officials are recommending that the City Council move forward with taking down its clock tower near Morgan Square to help make room for more investment.
City Manager Chris Story said no final decision has been made yet, but he said the current plan for downtown is to straighten out Main Street. Latest Forecast

"That means fully building out of that first block of Main Street just west of Morgan Square," Story said.
As part of that realignment, Story said the 70-foot clock tower near the square will have to come down.
The current version of the tower was built in 1979 as part of a community initiative. The clock tower was moved to its current spot on Main Street in 1989.
