Afghans who were promised safety in return for supporting the United States military mission have now, under President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, had it stripped away.

People in Afghanistan are now unable to enter the U.S., and many face the threat of deportation. Advocates say these broken promises pose a major national security risk by undermining the ability of the military to build trust with wartime allies abroad.

Democratic Rep. Scott Peters joined Afghan advocates Wednesday to call on Congress to pass the Enduring Welcome Act, which he co-sponsored last week. The bill would restart and strengthen the office overseeing the resettlement of Afghans in the U.S., which has been under threat since Trump’s return to the White House.
