LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- NV Energy is proposing a major change to how solar customers are credited for the energy they produce, and some homeowners say it will be costly.

Critics of the proposed change say this could discourage families from investing in solar.

"It's a huge disincentive for people to go solar because it affects the payback period of your system," Julia Hubbard, program director for Solar United Neighbors, said.

Currently, rooftop solar customers in Nevada use what's called monthly netting. That means any extra power generated during the day can be banked as credits, then used at night when panels stop producing.

However, NV Energy wants to replace that with a 15-minute netting. So, if a solar customer produces more power than they use at 2:00 p.m., they only have until 2:15
