TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - About 30 residents protested the removal of a decorated crosswalk at Westminster Oaks on Wednesday evening.
The group gathered around the half-removed geometric pattern, chanting, “save our crosswalks.”
One demonstrator laid across the raised crosswalk to protest the art’s removal.
Workers left the half-removed art on the crosswalk for the evening, but protesters said they expect them to return.
The removal of artistic road art and crosswalks across Florida started last week after a federal directive from the Department of Transportation.
The FDOT says all crosswalk markings must be removed by Sept. 3. The department also said that if Tallahassee puts in any more crosswalks or road art, state funds may be withheld.
