JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman, who works as a student transportation monitor, is facing child neglect and theft charges after police say she left a child locked inside a hot car while shoplifting at a Publix supermarket on the city’s Northside.
Police arrested Destiny James, 27, on Aug. 21 after responding to a Publix parking lot, where they found a child inside a Honda Pilot that was not running. James was identified as a student transportation monitor in her arrest report.
According to an arrest report, the child was sweating and breathing rapidly as outdoor temperatures reached 91 degrees. James's relationship to the child could not be confirmed by police.
