FRANKFORT, Ky. —

A Louisville lawmaker is working on efforts to restore voting rights to convicted felons in the Commonwealth.

Democratic Sen. Keturah Herron is partnering with Republican Sen. Jimmy Higdon on a proposed constitutional amendment.

Currently, non-violent felons can only have their voting rights restored by the governor.

However, a future governor could end that executive order.

By changing the state constitution, it would ensure most non-violent felons can vote in elections.

"It has been my belief that once someone has been convicted of a crime, they do their time and they come out that a part of them coming out and being a citizen and being whole is it that they should be able to vote again," Sen. Herron said.
