A Long Island woman has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a 13-year-old e-bike rider in Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County Police announced on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Virginia Waka, 47, of Lake Ronkonkoma, was arrested after investigators identified her as the driver of a 2012 white Ford Fusion that struck the teen at the intersection of Hawkins Avenue and School Street around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

According to Fourth Squad detectives, the Ford turned left from southbound Hawkins Avenue onto School Street, hitting the northbound teen and then fleeing the scene eastbound.

The teen was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Waka was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Injury. She was issued a Desk Appearance Ticket and will appear in First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.
