Mora County commissioners issued a disaster declaration Wednesday due to flooding prompted by heavy rains Tuesday night that damaged a section of the road between Mora and Angel Fire.

N.M. 434 was closed Tuesday between mile marker 5, five miles north of Mora, and mile marker 8, roughly two miles south of El Turquillo, according to the state Department of Transportation, until further notice due "to severe flash flooding and roadway washout." State crews were still working on the road Wednesday afternoon, the Mora County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post urging motorists to avoid the area.

County offices were closed Wednesday, although public safety-related departments kept operating on their normal schedules, county officials said in a Facebook post.
