MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — The Davison County courtroom, filled with families and first responders, reflected on a fire that happened earlier this spring.
Two of the people in the room had no idea the so-called "meeting" was about them.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Sheriff's office presented Life Saving awards to former jail sergeant Shawn Jerke and his son Deputy Trestin Jerke for their heroic response to a trailer home fire in April.
"As soon as we got into the structure, I just started yelling out and trying to see if anybody was home," Trestin Jerke said. "We found two occupants asleep in their bedroom in the back of the trailer."
The family's dog was also on the property.
"Their vehicles were parked really close to the trailer house and we didn't want them to start fire and maybe cau
