Trial demonstrations for utility companies are now underway as part of the Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) project. It was recently trialled on Queen Victoria Road and Greyfriars Road.
Coventry City Council is now evaluating various methods and their effectiveness in accessing existing equipment underneath the lightweight concrete slabs or introducing new utilities that may be needed. Four techniques are currently being trialled.
Impact moling and horizontal directional drilling can be used to install new services under the track, while vacuum excavation and keyhole coring can be used to access existing utilities in the ground. All techniques avoid the need for the slabs to be removed.
