Former Greenville City Councilmember Michelle Shain remembered watching the news in 2005 and seeing a call for convention centers across the country to open their doors to Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Shain brought this call to the city with an idea to turn the convention center into a space for Katrina evacuees.
"Greenville shines in a lot of places, but I think during that time it really stepped up to be a haven for people who needed help in all ways," Shain said.
