MARION – When the McDowell football coach position opened in January, Darrell Clark had no intention of applying.

Despite moving to Marion in October, Clark, then an assistant at Asheville High, was looking to move forward from football.

But when the Mountain Athletic Conference basketball tournament came to Asheville, Clark talked to some of the McDowell kids about applying.
